| Greene County vintner Robert Gardner at Gallery Christmas Open House Event |
One of the smaller vineyards in the Charlottesville area, Crow Mountain is located near Stanardsville. The one acre vineyard is owned by Vintner Robert Gardner and his family, and they have chosen to grow only Cabernet Sauvignon grapes with very low spray. They brought the vines to Virginia from Sonoma Valley, California, and planted them in 1994. Rob had apprenticed in the Santa Ynez Valley of California with both the Brander and Zacamesa vineyards for four years prior to beginning his own Virginia venture. Rob chose to produce his wine unfiltered, resulting in a rich, berry flavor with a soft fruity overtone. Jefferson vineyard was the first to age and process Crow Mountain grapes for Rob to everyone's delight. "I wanted a wine that is drinkable now" said Robert Gardner. The vineyard is part of Gardner's large farm situated on the slope of Crow Mountain. "The sloping hillside gives the vineyard good circulation so I have never had a frost in the vineyard, although other parts of the farm, including a pond at the foot of the slope has been hit by frost," stated Gardner. The Gallery is offering Crow Mountain's 2006 Cabernet which was produced at Keswick Vineyard with both Michael Shaps and Stephen Barnard serving as consultants for Robert Gardner. The Gallery thanks Robert Gardner for his continued efforts to bring quality Virginia wine to our tables. Cheers Rob!
