A Virginia native, porcelain artist Lena Taylor has accrued numerous honors in a career that has spanned over 30 years. Beginning in Richmond with creating porcelains as a hobby, Lena quickly exhausted the teaching resources available to her there and sought out notable teachers throughout the country. In juried shows across the South she won numerous 'Best in Show' awards in the Professional High Fire Clay category and 'Best of Division' designations at annual prestigious Virginia State Shows.
Receiving the coveted Duncan Certification in 1972, Lena was tapped by that company as a consultant on new porcelain paint development. The company also recruited her to instruct their own teachers in the finer techniques of porcelain painting.
Lena and her husband Sid decided to begin a teaching studio in Richmond, and at one time were teaching 400 students per week in the mid 70's. By 1980, they decided to concentrate solely on porcelain, and the company, 'Porcelains By Lena' was born. Lena has and continues to work with over 2,500 types of figurine molds. Her work ranges from old world Santas, graceful angels to barnyard roosters, wildlife, cats, dogs and birds. Her handpainted Christmas ornaments are sought by discriminating collectors across the South and the Gallery features these year round. Lena also does special commissions for cat and dog 'portraitures' and handpainted porcelain dolls from the photo of your child or grandchild.
Lena remains active in teaching porcelain creation and painting techniques. She participates in select regional artisan shows throughout the year and is heavily involved in Christian women's organizations and in various roles within the Richmond area business community.
