James Underwood was elected as a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA) 2006, New York, NY
Most recently James Underwood was featured in the National Juried Exhibition of Pastel Artists in New York 2006-07. He also exhibited at Dimension 2007 Exhibition Assoc. Artist of Winston-Salem, NC and the Academy of Fine Arts Exhibit (special award recipient) in Lynchburg, VA. 2007 also brought awards of distinction for Mr. Underwood including the Merit Award at AN OCCASION FOR THE ARTS show in Williamsburg, VA, 2nd at the Art Affair show in Richmond, VA, and a Best in Show at the Smith Mountain Arts Council Exhibit, Smith Mountain Lake, VA.
Other highlights include Best in Show at the 11th International Art Exhibition, Havre de Grace, MD in 2001, 1st place in Art on the Lawn, Bon Air Artist Assoc. show Richmond, VA 2005, Showcase of the Arts League of Roanoke VA 2003, and the Lexington, KY Woodland Park show 2003.

Born in 1937, James Lewyn Underwood grew up in the rolling countryside of Floyd County, Virginia. His family roots are in the Mabry Mill Buffalo Mountain area. Having grown up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, he has always been captivated by the beauty of his surroundings. James was employed as a draftsman until 1994 and his years of drafting experience are reflected in his realistic and detailed paintings. An accomplished artist, Mr. Underwood is virtually self-taught. His work consists of landscapes, florals, and unique views caught at just the right moment in time. He has found pastels to be his medium of choice. James Underwood states that a life-long appreciation of God's majestic creation is the inspiration for his paintings. The Gallery of Virginia Art and Gifts is proud to invite Mr. Underwood back for his fifth season with us.
